ITALIC Logo (re)Design

Rebranding Stanford's Frosh Art Program

ITALIC (Immersion in the Arts: Living in Culture) is an arts-minded, residence-based academic program for first year students. We live together in Burbank, the arts themed dorm, and took interdisciplinary art theory classes together all year. There are a wide range of artists including musicians, painters, photographers, dancers, writers and more. Although the program  was tight-knit and extremely talented, the logo of the program seems a little outdated. For fun, I took on redesigning this logo to better reflect and align the program’s brand and identity.

How can we represent the interdisciplinary, tight-knit, arts minded community as a cohesive brand?

Process

Old Logo

As you can see, it seemed very outdated and unintentional.

Thinking Process

In redesigning the logo for Stanford's ITALIC program, my thought process revolved around capturing the essence of the letters "ITALIC" in a minimalistic yet abstract way. By removing all the straight vertical lines and rounding out edges, I created a logo that maintained the recognizability of the letters while also conveying a sense of fluid movement. This effect perfectly reflects the interdisciplinary and arts-minded nature of the ITALIC program, as it highlights the endless possibilities and interactions between different art forms and theories. Moreover, the empty space within the logo represents the vast potential for creativity and innovation that ITALIC fosters, while the consistent stylistic elements for all letters create a sense of collective identity within the close-knit community. Overall, the logo captures the essence of ITALIC and its mission to bring together students from different backgrounds and interests to explore the world of art and creativity.

Reflections & Takeaways

This was a fun little leap experience for me coming from a painting background. I learned that there is so much you can do in the realm of  brand identity design, and it sparked my interest to learn more about this type of design. It also made me confident to just make things and not worry about the result.
